28/10/2011 - Primary School opened by football stars

Shrewsbury Town stars helped a primary school celebrate its official reopening after the completion of refurbishment work undertaken by Midlands based Thomas Vale Construction.

Mount Pleasant Primary School, in Bagley Drive, was formed in September 2009. This was a result of an amalgamation between Mount Pleasant Junior and Mount Pleasant Infants.

Headteacher Alan Brannen said: 'We are all under one roof now and it really feels we are now one school. We opened in September 2009 and at that point we were using two sites. Now we are all together. I am looking forward to a bright future for the school.'

The £2.3 million extension and refurbishment has given the school new classrooms, as well as decking and covered areas so children can have some lessons outside. Other new additions include a studio, kitchen and redeveloped play area.

The school had been operating out of two sites until the start of this academic year, when 14 months of refurbishment work was finished on the site of the old junior school.

To mark the occasion, Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner visited the school for the official opening ceremony.

Rob Lashford, Divisional Director, Thomas Vale Construction commented: ‘We worked together with Mount Pleasant Primary School and our client Shropshire County Council with a very informal and positive attitude towards our mutual goal. It’s great to see the pupils and staff enjoying their new school.’

Back in the summer 2010 children from the school had the opportunity to understand and learn about the dangers of a building site at their school Fete, where Thomas Vale staff explained the dangers and presented children with ‘Safe or Sorry’ books outlining the potential hazards through cartoons.
