Thomas Vale Construction has been aiming to reduce the size of its carbon footprint in 2010 after signing up to the global 10:10 campaign earlier on in the year.
The campaign encourages individuals, businesses, schools and organizations to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.
Thomas Vale has asked each employee to commit to one environmental agenda item and one corporate and social responsibility commitment for the next 12 month period enabling feed back total time donations and resource allocations back in to the local community. Their Tier 1 Supply Chain have also brought into resource management, workshops are being held to encourage thought upon fuel and energy usage.
Thomas Vale now have more than 10 Hybrid and Low Carbon Emission cars on the company car list and are allowing bonuses for employees who are helping to reduce the business carbon footprint through car sharing or using healthier and more environmentally friendly means of transport.
So far more than 85,000 people and organizations have signed up, from Delia Smith and Colin Firth to the London Underground and the new Coalition Government.
Groups committed to the 10:10 cause range from Tottenham Hotspur football club, online grocer Ocado, the Tate galleries and the Women's Institute to dozens of schools, universities and NHS trusts. Four of the major energy companies have promised to help customers hit their 10:10 targets by providing information on how their energy use compares with past consumption.
Some experts warned it was not realistic for Britain to aim for a 10% emissions cut by 2010.
Tony Hyde, Managing Director at Thomas Vale Construction said: “Thomas Vale is backing 10:10 because it offers us a way to take small actions that together add up to something meaningful and significant. Signing up to the 10:10 shows that we are serious about cutting our carbon emissions. The improvements we are already making to achieve this will be good for the environment, helping to tackle climate change, and also make sense financially, by reducing our energy and fuel bills.”
