09/09/10 - Contractor completes £1.6million worth of work on the prestigious Cube in Birmingham
Local contractor Fitzgerald is nearing completion on £1.6million worth of work at the iconic Cube development in Birmingham City centre, the final phase of the Mailbox development. The work, that is being completed on behalf of Buildability, involving extensive landscaping works, internal paving and highway improvements at this iconic new building.
The new building, valued at over £100 million, is a 17-storey cube which is aimed at providing a spectacular contrast to the increasing number of towers appearing on the Birmingham cityscape. Inside, the Cube features include a stunning open atrium that twists as it climbs the height of the 450,000sq ft building. Lined with coloured glass and with an exterior clad in shimmering metallic fretwork, the concept has visual links to Birmingham's heritage in engineering and jewellery manufacture.
The mixed-use building will include the city's first rooftop restaurant with panoramic views and a boutique hotel and residential apartments below will feature internal views over the twisting atrium. Further down, high specification Grade A office space has been incorporated and the basement includes a selection of exclusive retail and waterside restaurants. Fitzgerald’s landscaping work includes high quality landscaping and the construction of the new steps and landscape areas at the rear of the Mailbox and along the canalside next to the restaurants.
Nick Coley, Managing Director of Fitzgerald Contractors commented:“Being involved with such an iconic building really adds value to our portfolio and our decision to assist Buildability and PricewaterhouseCoopers demonstrates our commitment to working in partnership with our Clients”.
Completion of this scheme is only part of the story, however; Fitzgerald is continuing to generate positive levels of business in their market sector, construction, which is experiencing very challenging times in the face of public sector funding cuts and reluctance by developers to invest.
Their current portfolio of work includes the following recent contract awards: Public realm landscaping and environmental improvements at Newport for Telford and Wrekin Council £580k. Highway improvements for Sainsburys at Biddulph in North Staffordshire £180k Highway improvements for Warwickshire CC at Tuttle Hill, Nuneaton and Black Horse Road, Exhall near Coventry £700k Highway improvements for Tesco at their new store at Brookfield in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham £363k and Bus priority measures on the Route 87 Bus Showcase Route in Cape Hill, Smethwick for Sandwell MBC £450k
