Midlands Based Contractor, Thomas Vale Construction look to start their third scheme for South Gloucestershire Council this year as work starts on the brand new £3.5 million development, St Peter’s Anglican & Methodist VC Primary School in Pilning. The 53 week project will comprise of the Design & Construction of a new 7 classroom primary school including hall, kitchen, admin area & extensive external works which will include a grass football pitch, tarmac basket-ball/net-ball court, external decking and playground area.

Paul Clarke, Divisional Director at Thomas Vale Construction added:“As a local contractor, we are extremely proud to be working in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and St Peter’s School to ensure we deliver a high quality learning facility that will benefit future generations to come.”The building will be equipped with a full up to date I.T system as well as sprinkler systems, CCTV throughout for extra security and access controlled doors.

The sustainably resourced timber framed build will feature a combination of environmentally friendly elements. The school will include a green sedum flat roof, also known as a “living roof,” which will help to absorb rainwater, provide insulation and create new habitats for wildlife whilst reducing urban air temperatures. The school will be fitted with a biomass boiler which burns biological materials, such as pellets, logs or plant matter, emitting the same amount of carbon dioxide absorbed whilst plants are growing. The boiler will efficiently extract energy to provide both heating and hot water for the school which will be insulated with recycled insulation.

The school is focused on creating an environment which will allow the children to become more involved with their natural surroundings whilst educating them in growing their own fruit and vegetables, providing them with key life skills for the future. With this in mind Thomas Vale Construction will be providing the school with tree swings and a vegetable greenhouse area. Keith Tinline-Purvis, Head teacher said:“I am delighted that finally the new school building is about to begin after such a long gestation period. The children of St Peters will acquire an exciting building and stimulating environment that they helped to design. We are now looking forward to the time when we can move into this new state of the art facility and transform it into our school that will be at the heart of the community.”
