26/10/10 - Young people make public art for Chesterton
Young people from Chesterton and the surrounding area have celebrated the start of construction work on their brand new ‘Vision’ centre.
Along with county councillors, youth workers and members of Thomas Vale construction, young people were taken on a tour of the site to see first hand the very start of building works. They were also given the chance to admire the graffiti artwork that adorns the hoardings to the site, which has been designed and painted by young people from the area.
The Chesterton Vision Centre was awarded nearly £4.4 million under the ‘Myplace’ scheme, which is administered by the Big Fund, the non Lottery funding operation of the Big Lottery Fund. It will see the site of the former Chesterton Youth Centre transformed into a ‘Vision Centre’, with state of the art facilities for the whole community.
Construction is expected to finish late 2011. Councillor Ben Adams, Lead Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture said: “The start of construction is always extremely significant, and in Chesterton’s case this is no different. Walking around the site and seeing the huge piling machines in action just brings it home what an exciting project this is. Over the coming months the new centre will take shape, until construction finishes and the people of Chesterton will have a brand new centre to service their community and beyond.”
Malcolm Walasiewicz from Thomas Vale said: we were privileged to have been awarded the contract to construct this purpose built facility to benefit the people of Chesterton and the surrounding geographical area . The state of the art building has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the local people and we are delighted to have been involved in making this project a reality and shaping the communities needs.
