09/11/10 - Nursery Gets New Gardens
This month the Charlemont nursery in Sandwell has received a newly landscaped garden, thanks to the Sandwell Decent Homes Partnership. Opened in 2007 the Charlemont community centre is a large function room that holds various community groups such as a youth club, bingo hall and most recently the Little Einstein’s nursery group. The nursery group is part of the Government funded early years education system, in which children from the age of 3 receive 15hours a week free education in order to prepare them for school.
Thomas Vale staff worked on the site for four days and turned an unattractive and unusable area into a beautiful garden space for the children with three raised flower beds and a paved area. The children, carers and local community are all very proud of the new area.
Margaret Whitehouse (Chair of Charlemont TRA) commented on the work. “The residents of Charlemont Farm were very happy with the garden built by the Sandwell Decent Homes Partnership at the Community Centre. We think it was very generous of them and feel that they have made a wonderful job of the garden.”
Daryll Pritchard, Tenant Liason Officer for Thomas Vale Construction added. “For us, the Decent Homes programme is more than just improving homes, it is about improving the quality of people’s lives in the local community and we felt that this project would give the children real benefit. With the Charlemont Farm nursery recently being relocated to the Community centre it was nice to be able to provide somewhere safe for the children to play right outside the classroom. The garden has also made the Community Centre look more inviting for local residents and hopefully may encourage more people to use the Centre.”
