05/11/08 - £1.8 million scheme to help find homes for young people.
Jean Templeton CEO of St Basils said “As the first national pilot of its kind, we are pleased to be a part of something that will provide a real opportunity for young people to work and save, therefore opening up real choices for their futures.
Family who work with local communities to enhance their quality of life through supplying affordable housing, partnered with St Basils Housing Association to use 8 of the 24 apartments as a first step in helping find homes for young adults. St Basils have accessed Housing Corporation Innovation and Good Practice Grant to develop a scheme whereby part of their weekly rent charge is placed in a trust fund. This can then generate a deposit to help the occupiers buy their own home in the future. The remaining apartments will be let by Family for a mixture of Intermediate Market Rent and affordable rents.
Ian Wright MP, Parliamentary under Secretary of State officially opened the centre after an inspirational speech from one of the young tenants Mohammed Al Abdali who has recently moved into one of the homes.
“The opening of the Trinity Centre made all the planning and hard effort by all involved in the project worth while as it demonstrated the difference that the centre will make to the lives of those in Birmingham’s community. Thomas Vale is very proud to be working with Family Housing to deliver sustainable developments within Birmingham.”

The apartments were built in two blocks of 12 and all are 2 bedroom. The development consisted of modern methods of construction including a Timber Frame structure with a brick facade. It was also awarded with an eco homes rating of ‘very good’.
David Stevenson, Director of Investment, Assets and Regeneration, added “We are delighted with this new development. The apartments are of fantastic quality, in a superb location and it is a great to be working with St Basils to provide an opportunity for young people to rent a city centre apartment, whilst saving towards a deposit for their own home in the future.”
