07/06/10 - Thomas Vale Complete New School Extension
King David’s School in Birmingham, has expanded their facilities to include a state-of-the-art, contemporary classroom extension as well as other internal refurbishments to existing classrooms.
Thomas Vale Construction collaborated with Rush Davis Design Partnership to design and build the new extension which was heavily inspired by Jewish Tefillin.
Tefillin are a set of small square leather boxes painted black, containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah with leather straps dyed black on one side.
The building guises the same box like form with black angular steel structural supports which are visible through the windows. These represent the black leather straps found on a Tefillin.
Steve Langford, Head Teacher at King David’s School said: “King David School is a jewel in the crown of the Birmingham Jewish community. Its outstanding standards in the secular curriculum, the vibrant ethos and integration of Orthodox Jewish values, and the positive atmosphere of co-operation and harmony, all set in the context of a multi-cultural school in the heart of Britain's second city, make it a unique example for education, and indeed, society itself”.
King David's School on the Alcester Road is unique, as the only voluntary aided Jewish school in Birmingham.
Paul Burchell, Divisional Director at Thomas Vale Construction said: “We are proud to be associated with the scheme and feel its only helps to enhance impact and reputation of King Davids School in the local community.”
