29/07/11 - Head Teacher Calls New College Architectural Triumph
The new building provides a Post 16 Centre (Etone Post 16 Centre) for up to 250 students on the Etone site for high performing specialist schools with an applied learning specialism. Etone is currently the only 11-16 high performing specialist school with an applied learning specialism in Warwickshire.
Colin Turner, Headteacher at Etone College commented: “The Etone College Sixth Form building is an architectural triumph. The dream of having a Sixth Form has been surpassed by the statement the new building makes. It is an inspiring venue for learning and teaching, standing in stark contrast to its surroundings. For our first intake of students and their parents, the look of awe and wonder upon their faces as they step into this outstanding building fills all my staff with heightened motivation to ensure the students do justice to their environment.
“The external design is stunning with crisp lines and the contrasts in colour and range of materials all create a dramatic impact on the eye. This is matched by the interior design that cleverly utilises the spaces to give a light and airy feel. The learning spaces around the building vary enormously from the smallest technology room to the largest Art room and all manage to use the light and space to the maximum to generate a feeling of openness and freshness.”
Last year saw Etone College celebrate its 100th year serving the local community as an educational establishment. For the first 63 years of its life Etone College was known as Nuneaton High School for Girls and it was only in 1973 that it became a co-educational school. The school was originally 'Nuneaton High School for Girls', the grammar school equivalent for girls passing the eleven plus exam. However, after the abolition of the tripartite system, the school became mixed sex and changed its name to 'Etone Community School'. In 2002, the school was granted Technology College status under the specialist schools programme. It also gained specialist language and vocational status in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
