14/07/09 - Cemetery Enters Second Phase

 

Phase two has begun for the new Cemetery off the A525 at Keele. The £2.6million project is being undertaken by award winning contractor Thomas Vale Construction. The contractor has an annual turnover in excess of £200million and employs more than 800 local people on local projects and is key to regional sustainability.

Cllr. Mary Maxfield, Cabinet member for culture and active communities, said:“This is a major milestone in the project, which is going ahead because new burial space at Newcastle cemetery will soon run out…This site will provide for burials, including the interment of cremated remains and woodland burials…The burial site itself, although it will include headstones, will retain a green and landscaped appearance.” Phase one of this exciting project was completed in January 2009, with the final phase due to complete in February 2010. Newcastle Borough Council partnered with Thomas Vale Construction to fund £2.6million to have a new cemetery.The second phase follows the creation of an access road to the site, which is situated off the A525 at Keele. Thomas Vale Construction has started work to create the main cemetery building, car parking, a road network, footpaths and landscaping.The building for the cemetery will comprise of a multi-purpose room to be used for meetings, interview rooms, a public reception and toilets, as well as creating a building car park, a road network, footpaths and landscaping. Malcolm Walasiewicz, Contracts Manager, Thomas Vale Construction Commented:“Thomas Vale are delighted to be appointed as principle contractor for the new cemetery administration block for Newcastle Borough Council. The new admin block and car park is being developed on a green field site which will include two balancing pools and extensive energy saving sources. We are proud to be associated with the council and the local community in developing a modern day building.”
