09/07/09 - A New Dawn with Housing 21

This Spring saw the beginnings of a major housing project surface through Housing 21, providing an 87 bed “Extra Care” Scheme at Queensway, Brandhall, Oldbury. The 10.5 million development is the culmination of 4 years of negotiations with Housing 21 and Sandwell MBC, who have both invested in the project.

Housing 21, Thomas Vale Construction and Sandwell MBC will collaborate to replace existing Local Authority, Elderly Persons accommodation across the Borough with new contemporary 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, designed to meet the needs of independently living local residents aged 55 plus.

Charles Taylor, Development Programme Manager from Housing 21 commented, “We are delighted to be working with Thomas Vale on this very exciting development, which will allow older people to live independently in a secure environment. Extra care housing enables residents to enjoy a range of on-site facilities as well as a flexible care and support service. The new development will also be an asset to the wider local community who will be able to join in with court activities.”

The project was procured under a project partnering contract under the remit of a four year Framework Agreement secured with Housing 21 in 2006. The 2, 3 and 4 storey, timber – frame structure is a 70 week programme, with a completion due in 2010.

Ian Cox, Partnership Director at Thomas Vale Construction added,We are delighted to be on site, and are keen to ensure that our Black Country Supply Chain Partners are closely involved”.

The next major project will be located at Greets Green, West Bromwich, and is currently in for detailed planning. It is likely to commence on site towards the end of the year.
