26/01/10 - Newly-refurbished school opens doors

STAFF and pupils are celebrating after work finished on their newly-refurbished school. Thomas Vale Construction officially handed over the Victorian-period Horninglow Primary School this week after a £1.6m revamp, which has taken nearly a year.

Ian Coombes, Partnership Manager at Thomas Vale Construction commented:“The major internal refurbishment utilised an innovative design solution which has given the school additional modern teaching space, Thomas Vale Construction are proud to have been involved with this exciting project”

The project – which involved a complete refurbishment of the building, an extension and the installation of a new mezzanine floor to the school hall – was carried out by Staffordshire County Council.

It has places for 210 pupils and a nursery.

County councilor Veronica Downes, cabinet member for schools, said:"This is wonderful news for the new pupils and staff of Horninglow Primary School and heralds a brand new chapter in the school's life.

"Now the hard work really begins, with pupils and staff getting to grips with new equipment, new classrooms and a new school layout."

Paula Evans, head teacher at the Horninglow School, said:"This is an exciting time for the whole community. The new facilities will afford us superb opportunities to develop.

"The school building, although retaining its Victorian character, is now a school for the 21st century."

An official opening will be held later in the year.
