22/01/10 - Community football survives recession cuts thanks to local firms

A partnership of three Wyre Forest businesses are joining forces with Kidderminster Harriers Football in the Community Scheme team to provide football coaching and skills courses for children aged 5 to 14 during the summer holidays.

Ray Brookes, The Community Housing Group’s Chief Executive explained “we are really proud to be part of this fantastic programme. It compliments our commitment to help young people take part in activities which are not only fun and encourage healthy lifestyles but are a positive alternative to anti-social behavior.”

The Community Housing Group, Thomas Vale Construction and Travis Perkins, who have completed several successful building and regeneration projects together across the district, refuse to let the recession prevent them from supporting community projects.

Tony Hyde, Managing Director at Thomas Vales said “As a major local employer in the Wyre Forest, Thomas Vales are excited and proud to be involved with this project which will have a positive impact within the local community.”

The Football in the Community Scheme does not receive any financial assistance from Kidderminster Harriers FC or any other football authorities. As a not for profit registered charity, it relies on donations from organizations and businesses and fund raising events.

The partnership’s generous contributions will provide free places for over 100 local children.

Damion Rothner, Sales Manager at Travis Perkins said "We are committed to working with, and supporting the local communities in which we operate, especially so when working in partnership with organizations such as the Community Housing Group. This project gives us a great opportunity to be part of a project that benefits young people in the area and allows us to help build a positive future them and the community as whole.”
