07/01/09 - Fire Station Opens after £1 million Refurbishment

A Staffordshire fire station opened its doors to over 90 guests this week after undergoing £1 million refurbishment by Midlands based contractors Thomas Vale Construction in partnership with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

The Fire Station in the Cheadle area of Staffordshire was chosen as the Flagship in a massive refurbishment and investment programme by Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

Area Commander for the Moorlands, Alf Wilson says: “The community facilities at Cheadle were restricted and lacked capacity - when the station was originally built it was used primarily as an emergency response base. However over the years it has become a centre for a wide range of community fire safety activity - student firefighter initiatives, Duke of Edinburgh courses and fire safety presentations. The redeveloped station with stronger capacity for community and partnership involvement will help support additional educational, demonstration and event-orientated prevention work”

Works have included the development of the current station into a community fire station with room for community meetings, presentations, events, training and education talks and far better facilities for the fire-fighters who are spending more time at the station.

The station, which is also a multi use site with St Johns Ambulance, was able to remain fully operational through out the refurbishment as the contactors worked in phased operations to ensure the functions of the station were not compromised.

Ian Coombes, Staffordshire Partnership Manager, Thomas Valecommented This newly refurbished fire station with dedicated community facilities is the first of many across Staffordshire, and is a tribute to the on site relationships forged between the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Area Command, the operational fire fighters of Cheadle and the Thomas Vale site team. Keeping the residents of Cheadle and the surrounding areas safe with an operational station was paramount and this was achieved through exceptional cooperation and communication.”
