08/02/10 - Local Contractors Start Construction on £6.5m Health Centre

The event at the soon-to-be new Glebefields Neighbourhood Health Centre, St Marks’ Road, Tipton marked the start of construction on the £6.5million project between Sandwell Primary Care Trust, Sandwell Council and LiftCo.

Speaking at the event, Richard Nugent, Chair of Sandwell Primary Care Trust said: “With such a variety of health and well being services all under one roof, today’s ceremony marks the start of what will be a fantastic asset to the people of Tipton, and the wider community of Sandwell.”

The work is part of the Right Care Right Here programme and will be a one-stop-shop for health services including a pharmacy, opticians, dentist, three GP practices, community nurses, speech and language therapists, and a Citizen’s Advice Bureau all based at the new site.

Practice Nurses will have the facilities to provide specialised services for patients such as stop smoking stop smoking services, diabetes and asthma clinics as well as antenatal and baby clinics.

Cllr Bob Badham, council cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said: “This is an important and impressive project which complements a host of other major regeneration projects across Sandwell, from health and housing to business, retail and leisure.”

Speaking on behalf of Sandwell LiftCo, Mike Nicklin said: “We are proud to be associated with this project as it is an excellent example of local organisations working together for the benefit of local communities.
