04/02/10 - West Midlands schools shortlisted for prestigious Civic Trust Awards

A West Midlands school has been shortlisted for the annual Civic Trust Awards in the category for best new buildings. The awards are given to projects that are culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment.

The shortlisted project is St Luke's CE Primary School, in Wolverhampton.

St Luke’s CE primary school is an all timber, highly sustainable flagship project for Wolverhampton. It was designed by Architype and constructed by Thomas Vale Construction and is the first primary school in Britain to achieve a top BREEAM (eco) rating of Excellent.

Richard Green, Director at Thomas Vale Construction comments: Everybody at Thomas Vale and all the stakeholders involved in the project are extremely proud of the innovation, sustainability and quality of the end product”.

The new £5.9 million school building accommodates 420 children and is located at the heart of the regeneration of Blakenhall, an inner city area close to Wolverhampton centre where sustainable timber buildings are rare.

Jonathan Hines, Director of Architype, adds: “We believe that schools which benefit the environment also benefit children’s health and well being, and improve their performance in the classroom.”

Winners will be announced on 12th March at a ceremony in Liverpool, hosted by the organisation’s patrons. Architect and TV presenter George Clarke (Channel 4 – The Home Show) will present the Awards with the keynote speech delivered by Chris Wilkinson OBE RA.
