09/12/2011 - Pupils celebrate the grand opening of Bushbury Hill Primary School

Pupils and staff celebrate the official opening of Bushbury Hill Primary School to commemorate the new, fresh and modern building that has now been completed by Midlands based Contractor Thomas Vale Construction.

Along with guests including Governors, representatives of Wolverhampton City Council, Thomas Vale Construction, Architype and Councilor Page the staff and pupils delivered a fun filled assembly to mark the opening of the £4.1 million project which began back in September 2010. After a great deal of hard work by Herefordshire based architects, Architype and Thomas Vale Construction the staff were able to open the school to the pupils at the start of November 2011.

Councillor Phil Page, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Learning, cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony and said: “I am delighted to be invited to officially open Bushbury Hill Primary School. Staff and pupils now have truly wonderful learning spaces that will hopefully inspire young people from Bushbury and the surrounding area to achieve great things.”

Bushbury Hill Primary School is one of only 2 Primary Schools in the UK built to the Passivhaus standard, the most rigorous energy standard in Europe. It reduces heating energy by up to 85% and a total primary energy of around 70%, achieving buildings by design and optimising comfort at no extra cost.

The new school has state-of-the-art ICT equipment, two new library areas and smaller rooms off the main learning spaces to enable group working.

Bushbury Hill Primary School Headteacher Leigh Smith said: “It’s amazing that a vision can become a reality. Staff and pupils are now benefitting from the best possible learning environments.”

Richard Green, Divisional Director, Thomas Vale Construction commented: ‘We are very proud to have completed another outstanding. The design team at Architype and our dedicated supply chains partners have worked together to create an outstanding building that pupils and staff will be able to enjoy for many years to come.’

The building has a timber frame structure, acoustic paneling and excellent day lighting in the school hall. The school has a roof overhang which provides shade from the high summer sun which prevents overheating but still allows good day light through into the building.

Councillor Page added “Thomas Vale Construction has worked with Architype, on both this school and Oak Meadow and there has been a lot of consultation involved to create what I believe is a very inspirational school.”
