24/04/2012 - Thomas Vale named 'Contractor of the Year' 2012

Midlands-based Thomas Vale has been named as Contractor of the Year for the 8th time in the history of the annual awards by the construction industry publication, Building.

The company is widely renowned for its outstanding work within the built environment and over the last decade has become one of the most awarded principal contractors in the UK to date.

Worthy of a note is the Constructing West Midlands Framework, where Thomas Vale was named as the only incumbent contractor; the framework, which replaces the former Birmingham Construction Partnership, has an estimated value of up to £3billion.

In addition, the business has been involved in some of the most innovative projects for the region including the £38million office development, 10 Woodcock Street, for Birmingham City Council; two of the UK’s first passivhaus accredited schemes for Wolverhampton City Council, the £240million Stoke on Trent Building Schools for the Future Programme and the £180million West Midlands Contractors Framework with Worcestershire County Council.

Tony Hyde, Group Managing Director added: “This award serves to demonstrate the over-arching commitment that our employees have placed on the both the built environment itself and its contributing factors for its success.

“It reinforces the paramount importance of the focus on sustainability, corporate responsibility, customer care, health and safety, training and development and innovation – in order to maximise and leverage business growth and support. We are extremely proud of the contribution our employees and professional teams have made and will continue to make.”

Judges for the Building Awards added: “There was unanimous agreement among judges on the winner in this category, despite a high calibre of entries. They described Thomas Vale Construction as an “excellent, strong” firm with good company values, strong corporate responsibility, high customer care levels and an impressive approach to sustainability.

“The firm, which saw a 33.5% turnover increase last year, secured 75% of its work through repeat business. Among other things over the last year, Thomas Vale has delivered £38m worth of office development for Birmingham council and won a place on the new Constructing West Midlands Framework worth up to £3bn over eight years. The submission was an excellent entry and proof that medium-sized contractors can prosper in tough times. “A forward thinking company,”

The award follows on from the recent announcement that Thomas Vale is due to be acquired by Bouygues Bâtiment International subsidiary, Bouygues Construction UK; subject to European Commission approval.
