15/04/10 - GMAC shortlisted for the annual RICS Awards

West Midlands Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre has been shortlisted for the annual RICS Awards in the category for Community Benefit. The awards are given to projects that have a social or cultural benefit to the wider community.

The shortlisted Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre, also known as the GMAC is based in Perry Barr next to The Alexander Stadium, a previously constructed project by Thomas Vale Construction in Birmingham.

The GMAC as it has come to be known is one of Birmingham’s most innovative sports and community buildings. The prestigious £7.1 million project might seem ‘small’ in comparison to T5 or other projects delivered by major contractors; however through the Birmingham Construction Partnership, Thomas Vale Construction has produced a public building which is environmentally friendly, innovative and an exciting space to work, train and compete in.

Ken Jones, Partnership Director at Thomas Vale Construction said: “It is extremely rewarding to be shortlisted in the Community Benefit category of these prestigious rewards. We believe this project will leave a great legacy for the community of Birmingham and elite sporting fraternity alike”

The centre caters for all ranges and abilities and many of the users come from North Birmingham. The centre is also used by elite performers, becoming a training facility for the Olympians of the future and is a key facility for any country looking to use Birmingham as a base for the London 2012 Olympics.

Winners will be announced on the 19th May 2010 at a ceremony in Meriden, hosted by the organisation’s patrons.
