29/04/09 - Tony Hyde Recognised for Outstanding Commitment to the Region
After 38 years of dedication to the construction industry Tony Hyde, Managing Director of Thomas Vale Construction, received the highly sought after award for ‘Major Contribution to Excellence’ at the 2009 Celebrating Constructing Awards on Friday 24th April. The award is presented to the individual who is considered to have made the most significant contribution to excellence and quality in the West Midlands region.
In 1971, Tony Hyde left Stourport High school and joined Thomas Vale Construction as an engineer. He later left the company to work for Wimpey, during which he worked in the Middle East for Wimpey Laing on American military township projects in Saudi Arabia and Yemen..Going back to his roots in 1981 Tony rejoined Thomas Vale.
In 1992 he was one of the five Directors involved in a management buyout. The buyout turned the company around, transforming it into an award winning £220 million business as it stands today. Tony was appointed as Managing Director in 2001 and became Group Managing Director late in 2008.

The awards ceremony, attended by over 1000 construction professionals, provides recognition of the professionalism, excellence and innovation that lies at the heart of the West Midlands' construction community. The awards aim to represent the broadest possible spectrum of achievements. Celebrating Construction is co-hosted by CIOB West Midlands Branch, Birmingham City Council's Building Consultancy Services and the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence (WMCCE).
Steve Vickers, General Manager, Birmingham City Council commented on Tony Hyde’s success - Congratulations on your WMCCE Major Contribution to Excellence Award presented on Friday evening, which is well deserved for your significant contribution to the industry over many years and is a fantastic achievement. It is a true recognition by your industry peers for your hard work to improve the way the construction sector delivers and is perceived, together with applauding your social conscience to support young people, skills training and those less fortunate. I would like to say from myself and on behalf of all colleagues within Urban Design how pleased we are that you have received this award and how deserved we know it is for all the work you do. An accolade well deserved.
The award was followed by further success for Thomas Vale when they picked up the ‘Built in Quality’ award for the Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre in Birmingham. The 7.5 million project is one of Birmingham’s most innovative sports and community buildings.
