Our Environment

Our commitment to sustainability and the environment in this way sets us apart from our competitors and provides comfort to our clients.

Thomas Vale recognise that our activities have an impact on the environment and we are committed to minimising that impact through preventing pollution and seeking continual improvement of our environmental performance. We have achieved ISO 14001 accreditation and we are maintaining this standard which provides stakeholders with independently verified evidence of Thomas Vales’ commitment to environmental issues. This policy has the full support and commitment of the Board of Directors and will drive our actions.

Waste Partner Responsibilities

Over the last 6 years, we have applied Key Performance Indicators and undertaken rigorous audits of management processes and facilities to identify organisations who are suitable and share our vision. This has resulted in 27 companies who share out ethos and values and we have since reduced this to 4 local companies across our operational area. We receive regular reports on quantities of waste and recycling performance, as well as competitive rates based on extra volumes that they manage for Thomas Vale. This has allowed us to open up early dialogue in respect of reduction and recycling and we have set improvement targets.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Thomas Vale takes its commitment to reducing the adverse environmental effects of its work very seriously. Company practices are continually under review in respect of their environmental repercussions and are audited both internally and externally. Following initiatives by the UK Government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the company have developed a comprehensive Carbon Policy, the implementation and management of which rests with the Corporate Social Responsibility Steering Group. The policy, which has been publicised to employees, supply chain and clients, has been developed with the assistance of the Carbon Trust and sets forth stringent improvement targets to be achieved over a two year period.

The Environment and Our Supply Chain

Our Supply Chain are required to align themselves with Thomas Vale Construction Policies. In particular this includes Thomas Vale’s Environmental and Environmental Procurement policies. All our Supply Chain Partners have their on site performance marked on a weekly basis by our site management. One of the areas assessed is their Environmental Performance. The assessment is carried out objectively, based on pre-defined criteria. A score between 1 and 10 is given, with 7 being the expected standard. Scores of 6 or below trigger an investigation process, which works to understand how the poor performance came about and how it will be prevented in the future.

Energy Reduction Targets and Client Strategies

Thomas Vale are currently working with Key Clients in order to look at the reduction of the Carbon Footprint in the areas in which we work, both by involving Clients and Employees, but also by integrating in to communities to ensure a Stakeholder buy-in too.
